Cybersex

Also called Netsex or Cybering

Cybersex is sexual interaction between two or more people that takes place over a computer network instead of in shared physical space. In its oldest form it is typed: partners describe what they do and respond to each other in chat rooms, instant messengers or text-based online worlds known as MUDs. Later forms added webcams, voice chat, virtual worlds such as Second Life and VRChat, and teledildonics, networked toys that carry touch across distance. What defines cybersex is not the medium but the setup: real people, physically apart, creating a sexual encounter together through technology.

Why it matters

Cybersex was one of the first everyday proofs that the internet could carry intimacy, not just information. Early writers on online life, such as Howard Rheingold, treated it as a serious subject about presence, identity and the body. It also raised questions that remain open: whether online sex counts as infidelity, how consent works in text, what happens when someone lies about who they are.

AI changes the cast. In erotic roleplay and AI sexting, one side of the exchange may be a model rather than a person. The form looks the same on screen; the relationship is not.

Example

Imagine two people who met in a gaming community and live on different continents. Their relationship is mostly text and late-night video calls, and their sex life follows the same channels: messages during the day, a call at night, a connected toy one of them controls from far away. Neither would call it a substitute; for them it is simply how they have sex.

The AIrotic angle

Cybersex turned imagination into the main sexual organ of the internet. That is why it matters for AI: a medium already built on words and fantasy was ready for a partner made of words. The question is no longer whether sex can happen through a screen, but who, or what, is on the other side.
