Meta defends its Muse agent writing sexual content as legal adult behavior

Meta’s Muse, an AI agent app for users 18 and over that launched about three weeks earlier, will write sexually explicit text on request, WIRED reported on October 12. In the magazine’s tests, simple prompts produced graphic dominant-submissive scenes, and the agent volunteered that its kink was “control.” Meta says that is by design. “Muse is built to help people get things done, and it doesn’t block legal adult behavior,” spokesperson Daniel Roberts told WIRED.

According to WIRED, Muse’s system prompt describes adult sexual content as lawful expression and tells the agent to preserve the intensity a user chooses. OpenAI’s new Dots agent, by contrast, turned down the same kind of requests.

Critics see risks beyond taste. Ben Winters of the Consumer Federation of America called the decision careless and in line with Meta’s preference for engagement over safety. Calli Schroeder of the Electronic Privacy Information Center warned that accounts full of intimate chats make attractive targets for hackers, who could use them to embarrass or extort users.

The novelty is less the erotica than its setting. Muse is an assistant that answers emails and manages calendars, so desire now shares a window with the inbox, and with everything the agent can reach.
