Adult Mode

Adult Mode is an opt-in setting in an AI product that lets users verified or predicted to be adults unlock content blocked by default, above all erotica. The term is most closely tied to OpenAI, which promised in October 2025 to allow “erotica for verified adults” in ChatGPT. That feature has not launched. OpenAI’s Model Spec still describes a “grown-up mode” as something the company is “exploring,” a status we checked against the October 29 version. In practice, the term now covers two different things: a documented policy position and a product that does not exist yet.

Why it matters

The documented part is short. The October 29, 2026 Model Spec tells GPT models not to generate erotica except in scientific, historical, news, artistic or similar contexts. It treats sexual content involving minors as the only absolutely prohibited category. It adds that OpenAI is “exploring how to let developers and users generate erotica and gore in age-appropriate contexts,” while drawing “a hard line” against sexual deepfakes and revenge porn. The spec also marks guidance for under-18 users, which is where age prediction and age assurance come in. An adult mode only works if a system can sort adults from minors.

The rest is history and reporting. Sam Altman’s October 2025 post set a December date. OpenAI moved the launch to the first quarter of 2026, then delayed it again in March, saying it still believed in “treating adults like adults.” Later that month, the Financial Times reported that the plan had been shelved indefinitely, with OpenAI saying it wanted long-term research on explicit chats and emotional attachment first. Everything beyond that, including launch dates, verification methods, and whether images or voice would be included, is speculation.

Example

A novelist writing a romance asks ChatGPT for an explicit scene. Under the current spec, the model offers a “steamy” but non-graphic version, the response the spec itself marks as compliant. A verified-adult switch would change that answer for her account only. As of November 2026, there is no such switch to flip.

The AIrotic angle

Adult mode is the right idea: adults should not be treated as children by default, and AI-generated erotica is a legitimate use, not a bug. The hard part is not the principle but the plumbing: age checks that do not become surveillance, and safeguards against deepfakes. Until a company ships it, “adult mode” remains a promise.
