Sex Doll

Sex Doll refers to a life-size or near life-size figure in human form designed for sexual use. The category runs from cheap inflatable novelties to heavy, realistic dolls made of silicone or thermoplastic elastomer (TPE), with articulated skeletons and customizable faces, bodies and skin. Some newer models add heads with simple movement, voice and conversation, which moves them toward the sexbot. Sex dolls are among the oldest and most visible parts of the sex tech industry, and they figure in almost every debate about artificial partners.

Why it matters

Realistic dolls became a commercial category in the late 1990s, when the American company Abyss Creations began selling the silicone RealDoll. Since then, manufacturers in China and elsewhere have made realistic dolls far cheaper and more varied. Owners range from people who simply enjoy the sex to collectors, photographers and people who treat a doll as a companion. Popular culture has taken the topic seriously too. The film Lars and the Real Girl (2007) treats a man’s relationship with a doll with real tenderness. Adding sensors, motors or a conversational AI moves a doll toward the android, and that is where the line to the sexbot begins.

Critics raise objectification: most dolls are female and built to narrow body ideals. Others worry about child-like dolls, which are banned in several countries and are rejected by mainstream manufacturers and by us. Supporters point to harmless pleasure, companionship for isolated people and the long human history of sexual objects. As with most sex tech, the evidence on effects is thin and the moral panic often runs ahead of the data.

An owner in his fifties has lived with a silicone doll for years. He dresses her for the seasons, photographs her for an online community and describes the relationship as calm and affectionate. He also has human friends and a job. For him the doll is neither a substitute for people nor a sign of crisis. It is part of a private life that suits him.

The AIrotic angle

Dolls are where artificial intimacy got its body long before it got a voice. With AI they are gaining conversation and memory, and the line between doll, companion and gynoid is blurring. That makes old questions newly practical: realism versus the uncanny valley, how gendered the bodies should be and what attachment to an object means. Our view is that adult doll owners deserve the same respect as anyone else with an unusual sex life, with firm lines only where minors are involved.
