Camming

Also called Webcam Modeling or Cam Work

Camming means performing sexually or erotically on a live webcam stream for paying viewers. Performers, often called cam models, earn through tips, private or group shows and subscriptions, usually on platforms that take a share of the revenue. What distinguishes camming from recorded porn is liveness and interaction. Viewers chat with the performer, make requests and, through tip-activated toys, can influence what happens in real time. Camming became one of the main forms of online sex work in the 2000s and 2010s and is a direct ancestor of today’s AI companions.

Why it matters

Livestreamed private life began early. Jennifer Ringley’s JenniCam, launched in 1996, broadcast a student’s dorm room to the world. Commercial adult cam sites followed and grew into a large industry, with platforms such as Chaturbate (founded 2011) popularizing the tip-based model. Tip-activated vibrators made camming one of the first mass-market uses of teledildonics. Some cam platforms also offer streams for VR headsets, which links camming to VR sex. AI is now entering this work too, a shift described under AI sex work.

Camming is as much conversation as performance. Performers remember regulars, build personas and provide attention, work that researchers describe as emotional labor. Viewers often develop parasocial intimacy with a performer. That makes camming a natural target for AI. Chat assistants already help some creators answer messages, and fully synthetic cam personas compete for the same tips.

Example

A performer streams three evenings a week. Regulars know her dog’s name and her favorite music, and she knows theirs. A tip of a certain size triggers a pattern on her toy, a bigger one opens a private show. When she tries an AI tool to draft replies to direct messages, she finds it saves time, but she keeps the live chat for herself because that is what her regulars pay for.

The AIrotic angle

Camming shows that what people pay for in online sex is often attention, not only nudity. That is why AI chat feels so threatening to some performers and so useful to others. Our view is sex-work positive. Performers deserve control over their image and voice, honest disclosure when a “model” is actually software, and the freedom to use AI on their own terms. The same desire behind the AI girlfriend has long been met by human performers who are very good at it.
