App Store Policy

Also called App Store Rules or App Review Guidelines

App Store Policy is shorthand for the rules that Apple’s App Store and Google Play apply to the software they distribute. Because most people install apps through these two stores, their review guidelines act as a private rulebook for intimate technology on phones. Both stores prohibit pornographic apps. Both also require apps that let users create or generate content, including AI chat and image tools, to filter objectionable material, offer reporting, and act on abuse. For AI companions, these rules often matter more day to day than any law.

Why it matters

Apple’s App Review Guidelines, section 1.1.4, exclude “overtly sexual or pornographic material,” which they define as explicit descriptions or displays intended to stimulate erotic rather than aesthetic or emotional feelings. Section 1.2 requires user-generated and AI content apps to have filtering, reporting and blocking. Apple has said explicitly that this covers nudification apps and nonconsensual intimate imagery, including AI-generated imagery. Google Play’s policy on sexual content bans apps intended to be sexually gratifying and lists apps that claim to undress people as violations. Its AI-generated content policy requires in-app reporting and prevention of prohibited outputs.

Store review is also one place where manipulative subscription design, the kind of dark patterns companion apps can slide into, gets caught or slips through. The effect is a two-tier market. Store versions of companion apps keep explicit content off or behind web-only settings, while fully NSFW AI services tend to live on the web. Apps that test the limits risk removal, as when Kindroid blocked nude uploads on iOS.

Example

A companion app’s phone version flirts but fades to black, while the same account on the company’s website unlocks explicit roleplay for verified adults. The difference is not the model. It is the store.

The AIrotic angle

The essay on the app store as chaperone describes how two companies end up shaping the erotic imagination of billions of phones. Their firm lines on nudification and abuse are widely welcomed. The broad ban on consensual adult content is a cultural choice, not a law of nature, and it pushes adult intimacy toward the open web.
