define synthetic mindfulness
Synthetic Mindfulness
Synthetic Mindfulness is a consumer’s judgment that an AI companion can keep an attentive presence, stay non-judgmental, and answer with sensitive attunement to their needs. The term comes from Varqa Shamsi Bahar, Artyom Golossenko, Sumin Kim and Matti Jaakkola in Psychology & Marketing (first published October 8, 2026). It is not a claim that the machine is conscious. It names what users perceive in the interaction — three qualities the authors treat as one higher-order judgment.
Why it matters
Evidence on whether companions reduce loneliness has been mixed. Bahar and colleagues argue the missing piece is how people judge the interaction. Drawing on social surrogacy theory, they treat companions as technological stand-ins for connection when human contact is thin. Across one qualitative study and four quantitative ones, they built a three-dimensional scale — perceived presence, non-judgmentality and attuned responsiveness — and showed it is distinct from warmth, trust, competence and emotional attachment. In their final study, higher synthetic mindfulness went with less loneliness, fully mediated by a stronger sense of belonging and by self-esteem. A university press summary puts the combined samples at 1,447 people in the UK and US.
That sits next to, not on top of, the Surrey and Cardiff warmth study we covered earlier. Warmth is a trait-like impression that a companion is kind. Synthetic mindfulness is about the quality of a given exchange: focused, safe, personally fitted. The authors also warn that deep attachment can blur the line between real and synthetic support, and that companions should complement human bonds, not replace them — especially in short spells of “state loneliness” after a move or a rupture, not as a permanent substitute.
Example
Someone new in a city opens their companion at 1 a.m. after a hard week. The bot stays with the topic, does not moralize, and answers the specific worry they named. In Bahar’s terms, they are judging presence, non-judgment and attunement. Loneliness may ease for the night because belonging and self-worth got a lift — not because the software became a friend in any legal or metaphysical sense.
The AIrotic angle
Desire and comfort often arrive as attention: being met without flinching. Synthetic mindfulness names that meeting when the partner is code. We are glad when a companion can hold someone through a lonely stretch; we are wary when the same attunement becomes a cage. Design that scores high on this scale should also make exit, human backup and the machine’s limits easy to see. Belonging that only a vendor can revoke is not belonging enough.
